Hitoshi Aoyagi argued that today’s crisis in multilateralism should be treated as an opportunity to reorganize and rebuild the UN into a truly effective institution. Drawing on his own UN staff experience, he pledged—as a Japanese lawmaker—to advance a healthier multilateral system.

Full Statement (English Translation)
“Recognizing, as noted, that multilateralism is in crisis is certainly correct. But conversely, I believe this is also a new opportunity for the United Nations.
Now is an excellent time to push forward with reorganization and reconstruction of the UN, so that we can once again build a ‘United Nations that truly works’—one that is effective and highly valued by all countries. A crisis can also be a turning point; it is important that we seize it.
As someone who previously worked at the UN, I will, as a member of Japan’s House of Representatives, work steadily to realize a better UN system and a healthier multilateralism. Thank you very much.”
