Hideko Hadzialic underscored that political will and action by Member States are prerequisites for a functioning UN. She cited Sudan’s vast humanitarian needs despite scant media attention and noted that global military spending reached $2.7 trillion in 2024, arguing that the UN must host frank, economically grounded debate rather than formalistic exchanges. Referring to the General Assembly discussion on the “International Day for Peaceful Coexistence,” she stressed that the SDGs are universal human values beyond ideology.

Full Statement (English Translation)
“Thank you very much.
There is a sense today that those outside multilateral frameworks feel excluded. For the UN to function, political will and action by Member States are paramount.
In Sudan, 25 million people require humanitarian assistance, yet media attention is limited. Many countries are involved, and Sudan’s status as Africa’s third-largest gold producer is part of the backdrop. The UN must therefore be a place for frank exchanges—rooted in economic realities—not mere formalism.
According to a report released by Izumi Nakamitsu—currently UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs—global military expenditures reached $2.7 trillion in 2024, roughly equal to the combined GDP of all 54 African countries. We need candid debate in light of this reality.
In March, the General Assembly adopted a resolution on the International Day for Peaceful Coexistence; the United States, Israel, and Argentina voted against it because the term ‘SDGs’ appeared in the text. As a UN official, I must emphasize that the SDGs are neither right nor left; they are universal human values. For example, 138 million children are in child labor—a clear SDG target that all political perspectives must address.
With the guidance of Member States, we will continue to do our utmost as part of the international community. Thank you.”
