Naoto Sakaguchi drew on his fieldwork as a UN Volunteer in Cambodia and Mozambique, warning against the spread of “might makes right.” He stressed protecting democracy that respects the vulnerable and minorities, urged Japan to pursue coexistence with weaker countries internationally while building a more democratic world at home, and asked for views on the roles of the UN and Japan.

Full Statement (English Translation)
“Hello, everyone. As introduced, I served as a UN Volunteer in places such as Cambodia and Mozambique, working on peacebuilding and democratization.
I remain committed to the value of democracy. Around the world today, the notion that ‘might makes right’ is spreading; politics that seem to permit anything for national self-interest is becoming prevalent… Precisely in such times, we must defend and build democracy—a society that respects the voices of the vulnerable and minorities.
As a new ‘law of the jungle’ takes shape, Japan must focus on coexistence with weaker countries in the international community. As a prerequisite, we must build a more democratic world.
I would appreciate guidance on the roles that the United Nations and Japan should play. Thank you.”
